Creating Community: A Collaboration Combining Art and Action

The Arts Council of Kern Creating Community Program is a collaboration in which artists use the power of art to bring a message of greater awareness to our community. It is founded on the principle that arts communicate messages that can be used for hope, influence, and change.

The Arts Council of Kern's Director of Visual Arts Programs, Nicole Saint-John, has brought together interested artists and is providing program leadership, mentoring and support that they need to create theme-based works of art.

The five visual artists are of different backgrounds and generations. They participate in a year of collaboration to develop and present community-connected exhibitions. During the year, the artists will focus on at least three topics, partner with nonprofit organizations in Kern County whose mission addresses the same topic, and present an artistic model of awareness for each topic in an exhibition. After the first year, the Creating Community artists will pass on their knowledge and facilitate the next group of artists chosen by the group.
